GREELEY 8, TAPPAN ZEE 2

Greeley played a late night league contest at Sportorama in Rockland County against Tappan Zee.

After a bit of a slow start, and actually trailing by a score of 1-0 early, the Quakers got rolling. Nathan Quicke scored a power play goal with an assist to John Amodeo.

A minute and a half later, Sam Cohen scored with assists to Ben Berkey and Ian Steinberg. Forty-four seconds later, Steinberg tallied a short-handed goal, and before the period was over Harrison Lyss buried a one-timer off a nice pass from Steinberg. Greeley ended the period with a nice 4-1 lead as they pummeled the Dutchmen’s goalie with 19 shots on goal.

The Quakers continued their relentless onslaught with 18 shots on goal in the second period. Ian Steinberg scored his second goal of the game and Nathan Quicke scored his second goal as well. With a commanding 6-1 lead early in the period, Greeley then rolled out their entire roster of players and played an uptempo team game with all 21 players getting quality playing time and earning their ice time.

After Tappan Zee scored, John Amodeo scored with an assist to rookie senior Scott Wyllie. The score at the end of the second period was 7-2.

The third period saw all the players pulling for each other and playing hard. The lone score came as Harrison Lyss scored his second goal of the game with assists to Steinberg and rookie senior Jordan Finkelstein. The final score was an 8-2 league victory that also clinched a post season berth in the sectional playoffs.

Gabe Grunwald made 21 saves for the victory. Greeley had 47 shots on goal.  ^^Top

GREELEY 7, NYACK 3

Greeley hosted Nyack on Senior Night, the last home game of the season for the Quakers.

Senior Captains John Amodeo, Clayton Quicke and Ian Steinberg, as well as Senior rookies Jordan Finkelstein and Scott Wyllie were honored in a pregame ceremony that was announced by a senior sister, Maggie Beller.

Then the Quakers got down to the business of playing the league contest. John Amodeo scored a short handed goal off an assist from Ian Steinberg, and Jack Beller added a tally off an assist from Sam Cohen and Greeley was up 2-0 at the end of one period.

Greeley exploded in the second period as Amodeo scored again, this time with an assist to Harrison Lyss. After Nyack scored, Steinberg put the biscuit in the cage for his first goal of the game with an assist to Captain Derek Katchis. Nyack would not go away quietly and scored a power play goal to make it interesting at 4-2. But before the period was over, Senior Night was highlighted by Amodeo and Steinberg (assist to Ben Berkey) scoring 20 seconds apart to give Greeley a commanding 6-2 lead.

The third period saw the rotation of the entire roster of 21 players getting playing time and playing a solid team game. Steinberg scored with assists to Nate Quicke and Jack Beller. On this special night for the seniors, it gave both John Amodeo and Ian Steinberg “hat-tricks” to account for six of the seven goals.

Gabe Grunwald made 16 saves as the Quakers outshot the overmatched Indians by a 31-19 margin and the final score was a 7-3 margin of victory.  ^^Top

NEW ROCHELLE 4, GREELEY 2

The Quakers hosted New Rochelle. The game started 40 minutes late and Greeley started playing the game hard even later.

Greeley came out flat and uninspired and were outshot 13-2, but only outscored 1-0 thanks to some strong goaltending by Dan Frankel.

The second period saw Greeley start to play better and get some scoring opportunities. However, it was the Hugenots' shots that found their way in the net and NewRo had a commanding 3-0 lead after two periods.

Greeley had a chance to get completely back in the game in the third period. NewRo took two penalties around 30 seconds apart giving the Quakers a two man advantage. Ian Stenberg converted a great pass from John Amodeo into a nifty goal twenty seconds into the power play. The score was then 3-1 and Greeley remained on the power play for over another minute.

But Greeley could not score again and New Rochelle would go up 4-1 a couple of minutes later. Ben Berkey scored late (assists to Steinberg and Amodeo) to make the final a 4-2 loss. Jack Beller played very well on defense.  ^^Top

GREELEY 3, SOMERS 3

Greeley hosted Somers/North Salem at the Brewster Ice Arena, a rink that both teams call home.

The Somers/NS crowd was huge and extremely vocal. They had choreographed chants and provided a playoff atmosphere.

Ben Berkey scored early (assists to Ian Steinberg and Sam Cohen), but Somers/NS tied the game before the end of the first period.

In the second period, John Amodeo scored early, but then Somers N/S scored two times only a minute and a half apart to take a 3-2 lead. Then John Amodeo scored again, this time a power play goal, from Steinberg and Nate Quicke, and the score was tied 3-3 at the end of two periods.

Greeley made some adjustments to the lineup that helped keep Somers N/S off the scoreboard and some brilliant defense by Derek Katchis combined with solid goaltending by Gabe Grunwald shutdown their scoring chances. However, the Quakers could not muster many shots on goal throughout the third period and the overtime, and the game ended in a 3-3 tie.  ^^Top

PEARL RIVER 3, GREELEY 1

The Quakers crossed the river to play league rival Pearl River. Greeley has had very good success against the Pirates over the past few years.

Greeley came out very sluggish, giving up 17 first period shots (outshot 17-5), but net minder Dan Frankel was up to the task and the Quakers were only down 1-0 after one period.

Greeley came out and played a very good second period. They turned the tables on the Pirates, outshot them 16-6, had many quality chances to score, but the score was still 1-0 Pearl River at the end of two periods.

Ian Steinberg scored in the third period to tie the game, with assists from John Amodeo and Nate Quicke. The score was 1-1 when Greeley went on a power play halfway through the period.

However, the Quakers gave up a shorthanded goal on a breakaway and all momentum disappeared. Greeley never mustered another good run and Pearl River added an empty net goal to close out the game, a 3-1 loss.  ^^Top

JFK 2, GREELEY 1

Greeley was the only team to have beaten JFK/PV this season. JFK was 10-1 and their number one goalie averages less than 1 goal against per game. Greeley had beaten them 1-0.

This game was similar but with the opposite result.

This time JFK/Putnam Valley scored a goal in the first period and the Quakers tied the game in the second period on an unassisted goal by Ian Steinberg.

In the third period, JFK/PV scored the tie-breaking goal, and Greeley lost 2-1.  ^^Top

SLEEPY HOLLOW 5, GREELEY 3

Greeley came into the league game against Sleepy Hollow/Irvington on a roll. Three wins in a row had the Quakers playing with confidence and enthusiasm.

Early in the game, one mistake, one unfortunate bounce of the puck, had the Legends up 1-0 on Greeley. Then John Amodeo continued his torrid scoring streak and tied the game 1-1 off an assist from Harrison Lyss.

Amodeo scored again in the second period, this time a short-handed goal. But the penalties caught up to Greeley, as Sleepy scored a power play goal on their fourth PP opportunity (they would get 5 consecutive power plays and 8 overall for the game). So the score was 2-2 at the end of two periods.

Sleepy Hollow/Irvington went ahead 3-2 early in the third period. Ian Steinberg tied the game at 3-3 (assist to John Amodeo) with 6:43 to play in the game.

But once again, too many penalties killed the momentum. Sleepy would score another power play goal, add an empty netter and Greeley lost by a final score of 5-3.  ^^Top

GREELEY 3, PEARL RIVER 2

League rival Pearl River came into the Brewster Ice arena to take on Greeley in what has become a tremendous rivalry.

The Pirates and Quakers have battled for league titles and sectional playoff games over the years. It seems like they play each other more than two or three times a year. The games always have an intense pace and an air of excitement. The two teams bring out a lot of emotion from each other.

The first period saw Greeley get the better of the action in an up-and-down, wide-open game. Greeley outshot Pearl River for the period 12-10 and Sam Cohen scored the lone goal with assists to Ben Berkey and John Amodeo, to give Greeley a 1-0 lead.

The second period saw Pearl River start to take over the play. Perhaps Greeley started getting a bit tired, perhaps it was just a couple of defensive lapses and irresponsibility in the defensive zone, or maybe it was just bad luck and bad bounces of the puck. In any event, goaltender Gabe Grunwald was excellent in keeping Pearl River to only two goals for the period and Greeley was trailing 2-1 at the end of two periods.

The rest between the second period and third period was great for the Quakers. They got some energy back, the upperclassmen remembered how much they want to beat the Pirates, and the coaches had a chance to tweak the lineup.

For most of the third period, Greeley was not rewarded for their fine play. But they never quit and never stopped believing. With the goalie pulled for an extra attacker, Captain John Amodeo scored to tie the game with only 1:09 left to play in regulation, off an assist from Co-Captain Ian Steinberg. Then, only 35 seconds later, with only 34 seconds left in the game, lightening struck again, as Amodeo scored the game winner with assists from Nate Quicke (who moved up to forward from his normal defenseman position and really gave the offense a spark) and Steinberg. Greeley wins 3-2!

Captain Derek Katchis was excellent all night long on defense, and Jack Beller and Harrison Lyss also led the outstanding defensive corps. Gabe Grunwald made 29 saves on 31 shots to earn the league victory.  ^^Top

GREELEY 5, NYACK 1

It was all hands on deck as the Greeley Ice Hockey team went post-holiday shopping at the Palisades mall to take on Nyack in a league game.

The Quakers rolled out 12 forwards and 4 defensemen in the first period and played with very little fundamentals and execution. The result was 1-1 tie at the end of the period with Ian Steinberg scoring the lone goal.

The second period saw Greeley shorten the rotation of players and begin to dominate the league doormats, out-shooting them 13-3 and out-scoring them 3-0 for the period.

Although still not playing a fundamentally sound game, the Quakers were quite dominant. Harrison Lyss, in his first game back from a serious injury to his shoulder, scored (assist to Steinberg), then Sam Cohen scored from John Amodeo and Ian Steinberg. Then John Amodeo scored on an assist from Ben Berkey.

The third period saw Greeley roll out 16 forwards and 6 defensemen, using 7 forward lines. Everyone saw action and they played a very good “team concept” period. John Amodeo scored the only goal of the period.

The final score was Greeley 5 , Nyack 1. Dan Frankel played the first half of the game in goal and made 7 saves on 8 shots. Gabe Grunwald was between the pipes for the second half and made nine saves.  ^^Top

GREELEY 8, PLEASANTVILLE 5

Greeley returned to game action from the holiday/winter break in a big way.

Hosting the combined League 2 team Mount Pleasant (Pleasantville/Westlake/Valhalla/Briarcliff) IceCats, the Quakers came out skating hard and playing extremely well. Offensive pressure, responsible defense, and terrific hustle and effort led Greeley to outshoot Mt Pleasant 7 to 3 in the first period, however the score remained 0-0 through the period.

The IceCats then jumped out to a 2-0 lead, scoring two goals less than two minutes apart. Greeley could have folded their tents and retreated because the last time they played Mt Pleasant, the Quakers played great and still lost, and this game started to look like a repeat of the same scenario. But not on this special night.

Co-Captains Ian Steinberg and John Amodeo scored goals twenty-six seconds apart, both goals set up and assisted by Co-Captain Derek Katchis.

After the IceCats scored to go up 3-2, Ben Berkey then scored a pair of goals assisted by Steinberg then Amodeo. Greeley briefly went up 4-3, but the IceCats tied the game at 4-4, bringing the high-scoring second period to an end.

The third period really tested the mettle of the Greeley squad. A load of Bad penalties put the Quakers shorthanded four consecutive times, including being down two men for 1:23. However, Ian Sienberg (assist to John Amodeo) scored a short-handed goal to put Greeley up 5-4, and during one of the few even strength time periods, John Amodeo scored (assist to Nathan Quicke) to put Greeley up 6-4. Mt Pleasant scored to make it a 6-5 game with 1:47 to play.

John Amodeo scored 2 empty net goals in the final minute (assists to Katchis and Steinberg) to put the game away and make the final score 8-5.

Highlights and notes to the game were that goalie Gabe Grunwald shut the door in the third period, making 10 saves on 11 shots, mostly during long power play periods for Mt Pleasant. Gabe made 21 saves for the game. John Amodeo had a 6 point game, Ian Steinberg had 4 points, and Derek Katchis had 3 points. Jack Beller and Nate Quicke (along with Derek Katchis) were outstanding on defense.  ^^Top

GREELEY 1, JFK 0

Late Saturday night at the Brewster Ice Arena, the Greeley ice hockey team hosted the combined team of JFK of Somers and Putnam Valley.

This game was an important league contest as JFK/PV came into the game sporting a 3-0 league record and a microscopic goals against average of less than 1 goal per game.

The Quakers came out and played with terrific hustle and effort. The game was physical, with some hard checks and big hits. As the first period ended, JFK/PV took one penalty with ten seconds left and then another as the period expired.

Greeley took advantage of the two-man, 5-on-3 advantage to start the second period. Co-Captain John Amodeo scored a power play goal with an assist from Jack Beller.

Greeley played their top players all night long and at times ran out of gas during the third period.

But goalie Daniel Frankel was outstanding all night long. Dan was clearly on his game, played with extreme focus, and would make the one goal hold up for the 1-0 exciting league victory. Frankel ended up a perfect 20 saves on 20 shots for the hard-earned shutout.

The defense, led by Co-Captain Derek Katchis, Beller and Nate Quicke, played a terrific game.

A supportive home crowd saw Greeley move to 3-2 in the league standings, and back in the hunt for the top spot.  ^^Top

MT PLEASANT 5, GREELEY 1

Greeley traveled down county to the Ice Hutch to take on League 2 Mt. Pleasant. Mt Pleasant is a merged squad of 4 high schools (Pleasantville/Westlake/Valhalla/Briarcliff) and the Quakers had played them in a preseason scrimmage this season.

While every season is different and every year brings a new team, one constant over the years is that the IceCats draw out the best efforts of Greeley. Sunday night was no different.

The Quakers played well right from the start, but the breaks were not going their way. One defensive lapse, one fluke goal, and one "nice play" goal had Greeley down 3-0, even though they had outshot Mt. Pleasant and outchanced them during the first period.

Gabe Grunwald played an excellent second period in goal stopping all 10 shots to keep the score at 3-0.

The Quakers played terrific in the third period as well, and with Mt. Pleasant taking two major penalties, the 8 minutes of power play time led to many scoring chances. But the story of this game was the IceCats' goaltender. He was steady and sometimes spectacular all game long. Only Sam Cohen could manage to score Greeley’s lone goal (assist to Ian Steinberg) in the 5-1 loss.

Greeley outshot Mt. Pleasant 27-21 for the game, clearly had more quality scoring opportunities, and John Amodeo played a great game logging many minutes of ice time, but the Mt. Pleasant goalie was stingy. Also, excellent scoring chances were squandered away as the Quakers were not rewarded for their fine efforts.  ^^Top

NEW ROCHELLE 4, GREELEY 0

The word on the street is that NewRoc will be tearing down their ice rink arena to build more retail space. The Greeley hockey team will not miss playing hockey there. There was very little to be happy about in Thursday night's 4-0 loss to New Rochelle.

There was very little offensive pressure all night, with only 13 shots on goal by the Quakers all game. New Ro scored 3 goals on only 5 shots in the first period. Greeley suffered a shoulder injury to Harrison Lyss and a broken collarbone to Dylan Picker, thus all in all a tough night.

The league loss leaves Greeley’s record at 2-2 for the season.  ^^Top

GREELEY 2, TAPPAN ZEE 0

Greeley braved the elements and played Tappan Zee in a league game. It was the Quakers first “home” game of the season, and due to slow icy roads and closed highways, the game started 40 minutes late.

Greeley came out flying with an abundance of energy and a sense of determination to erase the memory of a poor effort the night before, when the team took only 9 shots. The team took that many in the first ten minutes of this game. The Quakers fired 15 shots on goal in the first period, but had nothing to show for their effort as the Dutchmen’s netminder managed to turn aside the assault and the game was scoreless at the end of the first period.

Ian Steinberg finally broke through with a short-handed goal in the second period with an assist from fellow co-captain Derek Katchis.

In the third period, Ben Berkey tallied a goal with an assist from Steinberg.

Freshman goaltender Gabe Grunwald made his first start of the season and posted a shutout victory. Although he did not face many shots, Gabe made a couple of key stops when the game was still in the balance and ended up with a nifty 11 for 11 performance to earn his first varsity win.

The entire Greeley team dressed and played in the game, with many players making their varsity hockey debut. The home bench was a crowded but happy place to be as the team improved to a 2-1 record with the 2-0 victory. Greeley outshot Tappan Zee 44 to 11 for the game. ^^Top

SOMERS 6, GREELEY 1

The Quakers came out very flat and uninspired in a league game.

They were outshot 15 to 2 and completely out-hustled by a motivated Somers/North Salem squad.

Even an outstanding supportive cheering fan base could not get Greeley going. It was 5-0 at the end of the first period, and the possibility of a complete blowout was in the air.

Only the score was close the rest of the game. Greeley was outplayed for the entire game, only managed to take 9 shots on goal and had no sustained offensive pressure the entire contest. Co-captain John Amodeo scored a power play goal with an assist from fellow Co-captain Ian Steinberg. The final score was 6-1.  ^^Top

GREELEY 4, SLEEPY HOLLOW 3 OT

Greeley opened their 2007-08 campaign in a dramatic and exciting fashion.

A late night Saturday game during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend brought out a huge, loud and very supportive crowd. Right from the pre-game warm-up there was a buzz in the air and a festive atmosphere.

Playing at WSA in nearby Elmsford brings out more students than usual and the crowd support was great for the team. The team rewarded the “home” crowd with a gritty, resilient performance against league rival Sleepy Hollow/Irvington.

Co-Captain Ian Steinberg got the Quakers on the scoreboard first on an assist from Ben Berkey. In the second period after The Legends tied it at one on a short handed goal, Berkey scored to put Greeley up 2-1.

In the third period, Steinberg scored again, on a power play, this time with an assist from Clayton Quicke.

However, Sleepy Hollow scored a power play goal with only three minutes to play to close the gap to 3-2. Then with only 1:56 to play Sleepy Hollow scored the tying goal and took the momentum of the game. Tied at 3, goaltender Daniel Frankel closed the door and made several key saves to force an overtime period.

Sleepy Hollow came off the opening faceoff of the overtime with their top player on a breakaway, only to be turned away again by Frankel. After getting a power play opportunity in the overtime, Ian Steinberg completed a “hat-trick” and his third goal of the game won the game in sudden death overtime, 4 to 3.

It is a nice start to the league season as Greeley wins an important early season game. The crowd was great chanting “Let’s Go Greeley” and other loud and supportive rants; the players responded with a great effort. Co-captains John Amodeo and Derek Katchis played an outstanding game on offense and defense respectively.  ^^Top
